What do you hate about pet adoption procedures?

Question by LeeLee22: What do you hate about pet adoption procedures?
Is it the steps involved to get an adoptable pet? The cost? I am creating a service to help pet adoption agencies get more potential parents and I'm trying to pinpoint the main reasons people don't adopt or are discouraged away from it. Any feedback would be great?

Best answer:

Answer by Midwest
I've adopted 2 of my 3 dogs.
Every rescue has a different adoption application. I can understand that they all have different criteria but it would be nice to fill out one and submit it to the different rescues instead of submitting several different ones.

Also, I know the rescues are busy but I contacted over 10 rescues and I think I heard back from only 3 or 4. You wait and wait, and then you decide to move on. We wanted to adopt a dog around 50-60 lbs that was okay with small dogs. We had no other requirements. There were several dogs available that would have fit well with us but no one got back to us. We waited, and waited.. it took us over 2 months to adopt the dog we got. Most people want a quick turn around. I can understand 2-3 weeks to contact but 2 months seems a bit much.

We have a very good application. I'm home for 2 months in the summer and have march break, christmas off. My husband works 2 mins from home so he comes home at lunch and lets the dogs out. We have a huge privacy fenced yard. Excellent references. Only use positive training methods, and feed our dogs all natural food and treats. It should not have taken us over 2 months to adopt a dog. I think many people get fed up and turn to buying a dog from a breeder because of that.

Q&A: What would be a good exotic pet for my 5 year old son?

Question by lala619: What would be a good exotic pet for my 5 year old son?
My 5 year old son would really love a spider as a pet. Unfortunately I am not keen on this idea or snakes either. I don't mind reptiles or amphibians, but I do not know too much about them.
We currently have two Bengal cats and a Hampster, these are his sisters pet and he feels that he doesn't have one of his own.
Any new pets would also have to fit in with our other family pets.

Thank you for any help.

A turtle might be nice for a 5-year-old, or a nice fish aquarium.

Don't get any more rodents, including rabbits. A hamster is enough!

Need information about buying a lovebird?

Question by Claire V: Need information about buying a lovebird?
I live in St. Louis and am very interested in getting a lovebird. I have two birds already so I'm pretty familiar with bird care and the responsibilities that come with them. However of my birds were bought from friends so I have really no experience with dealing with breeders and buying them. I live in St. Louis, but am moving to Kansas City over the summer so I could get a bird at either place.

Does anyone have any tips about finding a breeder or a store that sells healthy, friendly lovebirds? Is it bad to look on Craigslist for one (although I've had poor luck with this so far)? Anyone in the St. Louis or Kansas City area have any recommendations on breeders or stores that sell lovebirds?

In addition, I'm a little reluctant to ship a bird, I'm worried it will traumatize it. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Basically any help or tips you could get me would be helpful. I'd love to get the bird over the summer, but I'd rather wait for a healthy, happy bird than get the bird immediately. Thank you to everyone!

Question by Levi B: What is a good intermediate Reptile pet (Preferable a lizard)?
I am looking for a new reptile pet i have space in my room so size is not a problem. But if i am wrong plz let me know and my price limit is around 150$ excluding cage

Answer by orisha9999
I would say go for an iguana. They're pretty self entertaing and laid back. I honestly dont truly know what the best best would be. But growing up my parents had owned a iguana for quite a while. and there isn't a whole lot of taking care of them. You can take them out and they'll just roam around, crawl up your curtains, around your couch, quite entertaining. For care I know u for sure need a heat rock, a heat lamp too is cool, a small body of water for it to cool off in. crikets and live food keeps them pretty healthy and entertains them. the neat thing too is if some how they lose their tail, it'll grow back. at least my parent's iguana did. it was very strange. But yes, iguana's probably the best bet from my view point. I really hope I have helped. Cuz your getting pretty pricey if u start looking at bearded dragons and charmelions and stuff, especially if you want to get one from a place with the papers and proper stuff. People don't normally have papers on them. But it's good to inquire. But for a normal iguana, dont worry aboutthat stuff. just dont let it whip u, it hurts. and they dont bite if u stay on a good healthy interaction with him on a regular basis. Anyhow, I hope I've helped. I'm not an expert, just had experience with one and thought I'd answer.

How can I encourage my college classmates to support pet adoption?

Question by Amanda: How can I encourage my college classmates to support pet adoption?
I'm giving a persuastive speech on pet adoption. At the end I have to have something concrete for my classmates to do to show I persuaded them to help out my cause (for example signing a petition). We are all broke so I can't ask for money. I was thinking of passing out opt to adopt stickers and asking them to wear those all day. Also I would pass out a list of online websites and local shelters they could adopt from. Any ideas?

Breeding leopard geckos?

Question by Jennifer: Breeding leopard geckos?
Okay, so I've been thinking about maybe considering, perhaps buying a female gecko to breed with my male. I'm not interested in the specifies here, I'm actually pretty well versed in the ins and outs of breeding, egg care, and hatchling care. Although some tips wouldn't be amiss.

What I'm really interested in is, what would I do with the babies? I get the feeling I can't just but them in a box with a "Fri Leperd Geekos!" sign on it and put the box on a sidewalk.

What do I do with them?

Best answer:

Answer by Danger Erin
this is half of the issue with breeding really.
no matter how prepared you are with feeding the adults, incubating the eggs and whatnot, you should not breed if you dont have a definite outlet for the babies.
if you arent breeding for a reason (specific morphs, temperament, size etc, people who DEFINITELY want some) then dont do it. its very hard on the female.

however, since leopard geckos lay eggs, you can hatch as many, or as little babies as you like.
most pet shops wont take the babies off you, and if they do, most wont pay. before you get your female (or breed her with the male), ask your friends or neighbors if they would like a leopard gecko - or you could keep them yourself.
make sure they are serious about it before you breed.

so i'm not trying to talk you out of getting a female or whatever, but if you dont have something to do with the babies, then dont breed at all until you do :)

Q&A: has anyone ever sold their reptile pets to their local pet stores?

Question by ????: has anyone ever sold their reptile pets to their local pet stores?
has anyone ever sold their reptile pets to their local pet stores? If so, what store? How much and what? Do you think my reptile store will buy it from me if i sell my leopard geckos at a good price, like 2 baby leopard geckos for 30 dollars? When they are worth like 30 bucks each! Do you think they will accept it? How much do the stores usually get for their reptiles?

Best answer:

Answer by krisrckt7
to be honest, a decent pet store would not buy your geckos from you. (they might take them for free if you can't keep them) you'd be better off putting an ad in the paper if you wanted to sell them :) good luck!

Do I need to trim the long fur between the toes of my long-haired cats?

Question by webstufff: Do I need to trim the long fur between the toes of my long-haired cats?
My two cats have beautiful, medium-length fur that requires next to no care from me, but I wonder whether the long fur that grows between their toe-pads is uncomfortable for them or whether it protects their feet... I've looked at numerous cat-care/grooming sites but no one says anything about trimming this hair.

Best answer:

Answer by cougarkilledman
You don't need to, but it helps with cleanliness and I think the cats like it. It also helps if they crawl through undergrowth and stuff so it doesn't get caught on twigs and berry bushes.

My geeko has eating problems!?

Question by : My geeko has eating problems!?
My geeko hasn't eatten a thing since we got him or her. He or she, isn't even a year old yet, and it's tail is very very thin. It looks as though he or she doesn't eat. Does anyone know what I should do? And is taking him to a vet a good idea or is it just a waist of money and time? Oh and I have tried feeding it both crickets AND mealworms, AND that dead fly stuff.

Best answer:

Answer by Bear
I would take it to the vet for sure, there may be something going on inside the gecko which is why he doesnt want to eat. They may be able to run some tests and find out what is wrong, and if need be teach you how to force feed. Good luck

Would you consider horses pets or livestock?

Question by a girl without a clue: Would you consider horses pets or livestock?
Would you consider horses pets or livestock?

If you think of them as pets--do you oppose horse slaughter, since we do not slaughter pets (dogs, cats, etc)? If you think of them as livestock--do you support horse slaughter, since we slaughter livestock (cattle, sheep, hogs, etc)?

Off Topic: But this is then confusing once again--rabbits/bunnies can be considered both since some people slaughter (and eat) rabbits.

So: Do you consider horses pets or livestock?
