What should i expect volunteering at a cat shelter?

Question by JC: What should i expect volunteering at a cat shelter?
here's a description of the volunteering position for cat care and shelter cleaning
"Volunteers needed to groom the cats, give them some love and help keep the shelter clean. Cleaning includes litter box scooping, sweeping, mopping, doing laundry, and washing cat dishes. Help with yard work is also needed."

How much is cleaning is to be expected? Will i be doing more cleaning then caring for cats? Would i be expected to be with other people when volunteering or is there a chance that i might be alone when volunteering except for staff?

I want to help out and i love cats never had a cat as a pet and haven't been around one much, but I also want to meet people as well, is this a good avenue to make friends and meet people ?
