Why do pit bulls make good guard dogs, but other people say they aren't agressive at all?

I'm really confused about pit bulls. The only one I've met in real life was hyper and kind of dumb. Are they not NATURAL guard dogs, just trained that way because they're very powerful...? I'm trying not to be breed racist because I'm sure there are some lovely pits out there but I need some facts about them.
